Machine Man #3 (Marvel/1978)

Machine Man #3 (Marvel)

Jack Kirby (w) & (a)

From the mind of Jack "King" Kirby comes Machine Man an artificial construct that has become sentient and lives despite the efforts of it's creators. That is it's human side. Machine Man originally appeared in Kirby's short-lived 2001: A Space Odyssey series based on the film of the same name.

Machine Man was indeed given independent life as the Monolith silently arrived and Aaron, the machine became a man. Since then the military have been trying to destroy him to cover up their probably unauthorised experiment.

In this issue an intergalactic distress call is monitored via a madman's brain. Determined to help Machine Man builds a device to rescue the trapped inhabitant of a craft falling into a black sun. However things as always are not as they seem and what the unknown alien does is try and change places with Machine Man and his other would be rescuers in the hospital.

Foiled a second attempt to rescue the arrogant alien succeeds and another machine entity appears with venom towards flesh based life. His or rather "it's" name lets not make assumptions here (a machine is gender less) Ten Four and he means to inflict genocide on the world.

Machine Man try's to stop him but is defeated. To be continued.

I may well try and pick up the next three issues when I can find them. I always liked this series and most things by Kirby are worth reading though his dialogue overuses the exclamation mark!

Machine Man ran for 19 issues with Kirby writing and drawing the first ine issues and then there is a gap until Ditko takes the helm with #10 until the final edition.
