A "Look-in" to the Seventies: 1977

A year I remember well as I started Polytechinic of Central London (PCL) which later became the University of Westminister. I was living in halls behind Tottenham Court Road and spent much time in the student union bar (now closed) drinking Swan Lager. Those were the days....

Oh and James Callahagan was Prime Minister, Wilson having retired. Fleetwood Mack released Rumours one the the best selling albums of all time, Abagail's Party opens at the Hampstead Theatre with Alison Steadman and The Clash release their debut album. Marc Bolan was killed in a car crash.

Meanwhile the National Front are on the rise and there are clashes in Lewisham, Lyndsey De Paul comes second in the Eurovision Song Contest with Rock Bottom, Gay News is found guilty of blasphemy over a poem that made homosexual reference to Jesus. The prosecution was brought by that old bat Mary Whitehouse who also thought Tom & Jerry was "too violent" and also didn't like Chuck Berry's Ding a-ling either.

Meanwhile life went on and younger ITV viewers continued to be entertained by that publication the "Junior TV Times which included programmes like Just William featuring that horrible little girl that was played by Bonnie Langford who my generation grew up hating.

Then there was The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman and Space 1999 continued. Comedy was still present with good old Benny Hill and pre-PC humour beloved by so many even now in the age of "woke".

Pop music was present in the form of David Soul who appeared as a double page pinup. If you start collecting Look-in make sure they are complete as so many copies have pictures cut out.

The comic we were buying that year included the arrival of fan-favourite Judge Dredd from 2000AD the only one still going today.
