Previews Picks: January 2019
The latest issue of Previews, the comic shop catalogue came out a little late and the window for making orders is quite short this month but I thought it time to revive my monthly posts giving recommendations about up coming comics and graphic novels.
Now that I've retired my monthly pull list has drastically reduced, but I also like to pick up back issues that I missed most of which are reviewed on my blog.
First up is the landmark issue #1000 of Detective Comics featuring Batman who of course originally appeared in Detective Comics #27 all those years ago! This is the second DC title to reach #1000 as Action Comics did last year despite not starting until after Detective Comics. All down to varying publishing schedules over the decades.
Next up is a new incarnation of Dial H for Hero from DC (see Previews Cover above). I remember Bobby Reed from the sixties the first person to hold the dial and was quite impressed by the last pre-New 52 version but like most of these minor characters from DC they shine for a while before disappearing back into the ether.
This time it's the turn of Miguel in a six issue Mini Series in the Wonder Comics line (yeah I ordered the Wonder Twins own mini-series last month.
Other DC titles on my list: Superman #9, Hawkman #10, Freedom Fighters #4 & Wonder Twins #2.
I also cancelled one DC title this month. The new Martian Manhunter maxi series is dreadful. Hate the art. Hate the retro story. I wish DC had never published this. Please do not encourage them.
Marvels up next and in addition to the two on-going Conan comics there's a five part mini series Age of Conan: Belit which being a Conan junkie is on the list. I've also ordered one of the Avengers: No Road Home issues because there's an oversized issue featuring our oversized Barbarian. Nuff said. Don't care about the rest of the series, just this one on it's own will do nicely. Conan in the Marvel Universe. great stuff!
Other Marvel Titles ordered Fantastic Four #8, Guardians of the Galaxy #3
Over at IDW the Star Trek The Q Conflict reaches it's halfway point but also there's a Star Trek: Waypoint Special 2019 featuring no less than four stories set across the Star Trek universe!
As Conan re-appears Red Sonja has her second issue published by Dynamite Entertainment. Hopefully we'll see an inter-company crossover or two featuring these two!
Also up is the final issue of the Battlestar Galactica (classic) mini series.
Archie Comics do some interesting stuff these days and the latest mini series is Sabrina: The Teenage Witch. Not sure which of the continuities this is set in but I'm sure it'll be fun. I just hope they finish it. Also the second issue of Blossoms 666 is out as is the first volume of Vampironica, a series I missed whilst hospitalised. All ordered and awaited with interest!
Last but by no mean least is the latest issue of The Creeps (now Bi-monthly) anthology of horror stories in the Warren tradition!
All titles due for release in March 2019
