Superboy #177 (DC/1971)
Superboy #177 (DC)
Main story: Leo Dorfman (w) Bob Brown & Murphy Anderson (a)
One of my favourite comics back in the sixties was Superboy, tales of Superman when he was a lad. Long gone in modern comics law (there are now several other "Superboys" including Kal-El's son Jon) these were part of the Superman ethos that I grew up with.
A mini-version of what he was to come combined with his adventures in the 30th Century with the Legion of Superheroes made this character central to the "pre-Crisis" Dc Universe.
This tale is no different as Superboy fights to keep his family & secrets safe from a super-villain whose attempt to take over the Earth was thwarted by Clark. Framing his adopted parents for selling contaminated food he flees with his secret equipment erasing all traces of his presence on the Kent household.
His movements are tracked every time by the mystery villain who we later learn is simply a Young Lex Luthor in disguise still smarting from Superboy's putting a fire out in his La which cost him his hair. No really that's what started the grudge match back in the silver age.
This being one of the year long 52 page issues contains back-up stories including a Legion adventure with the return of Dev Em a reformed Kryptonian villain. There were far too many survivors from Krypton turning up before the Crisis.
Dev-Em first appeared in Adventure Comics #287.
