Eighties Extra - Top Of The Pops Annual 1981

As an addition to the issues of Look-In I've selected for the eighties there are two BBC posts of which this is the first featuring music from the year which is why yesterdays post only contained TV clips. Despite the cover date as was the practice of publishers that continues to this day the year on the cover was to allow for longer shelf life but actually was published in 1980 and the content reflects that.

I only came across these by accident and decided to pick this one up because of those available this was the only one without "that DJ" on the cover. Sadly there's an article about him in this book along with a pop star I no longer play.It shows how much these individuals (including the artist) hid in plain sight. I'd never have guessed at the time.

Still we mustn't let these bastards spoil our reminiscing and Top Of The Pops was a major part of most peoples viewing in both the seventies and eighties, though I always preferred The Old Grey Whistle Test with "Whispering" Bob Harris late at night!

But before we go any further here's the opening theme from the early eighties programme:

The annual is oddly published by World Distributors rather than the BBC and contains features on a whole range of stars around at that time including the ones featured below in the video selection plus ELO, Supertramp Wings, Boney M Gary Numan and so many more. One of my favourite DJ's at the time was Noel Edmonds who gets a feature in this book.

One of the top artists in 1980 was of course Blondie, the woman who stole the hearts of every man (and probably more than a few women) that saw her. She had three number one singles that year Call Me, Atomic, and this little number The Tide Is High.

Meanwhile Elton John wasn't faring so well in the British charts (this single went to number 33 in the Top 40) but went Gold in the USA. Not one I particularly remember which is why I've chose the video for Little Jeannie:

And finally to end this small selection of eighties music is one of Hot Chocolates performances from Top Of The Pops is Are You Getting Enough which reached No 17 in the UK Top 40.
