New Release; Reign of the Supermen (Animated movie) (DC/Warner)
The death of Superman was a major event not just in the world of comics and in the DC universe itself but was of such note that it made the BBC News which I remember listening to with horror. This was the nineties and I wasn't collecting comics but killing the superhero, the Superman?
Eventually I did pick up a trade paperback from a now closed bookshop at Clapham Junction and read with intrigue more than once. It wasn't until some years later when I had returned to the hobby that I got hold of the follow-up story lines in collected form World Without a Superman and Reign of the Supermen.
Four characters trying to be or impersonating the Superman. Kon-El who would eventually become Superboy, Steel, very much DC's version of Iron Man, the Eradicator and the Cyborg-Superman.
It's been a while since I read the comic but do remember the differing art styles as the story-line came out weekly across the then four different Superman titles.
This animated movie does do the essence of the story well and as a fan of these I thoroughly recommend the DVD.
This is the first of four releases due from DC this year the next being Justice League: The Fatal Five followed by Wonder Woman : Bloodlines and the classic Jim Lee Batman story Hush.
