Marvel Select: Hawkeye (Panini)

Hawkeye was like Black Widow very much a secondary character of only minor interest to me before the Marvel Cinema Universe came into being. Like Black Widow Clint Barton has come into his own rather than frankly just being a poor rip-off of Green Arrow and like his DC Comics equivalent has now been given his own TV series on the Disney Channel, hence the arrival of this "bookazine" from Panini.

Whilst that is a channel I'll never see  I did pick up this edition after a glance through at the pages ans and was impressed by the layout and art from David Aja (in particular) and Javier Pulido (who covers what was issues #4 & #5 of the original series). The story by Matt Fraction certainly holds the readers interest.

Here we have a rather down and out "super-hero" living in a rather poor part of town and has run-ins with landlords, local Russian gangsters plus having to look after a run-over dog and try and take care of his neighbours. Certainly a gritty background for this adventure.

Enter Madame Masque a villain I'd not seen for a while and  Clint finds himself a sidekick in the form of Kate Bishop from the Young Avengers. This volume reprints Hawkeye #1 to #6 and is part of an on-going series which has currently reached 22 issues so Hawkeye could reappear either as a further "bookazine" or in another Panini comic if they get rid of the bloody symbiotes in Marvel Essentials. Just asking....

Also in this volume is a reprint of Young Avengers Present: Hawkeye which makes this a pretty good value comic. The last story is better read a little later as the art style jumps rather abruptly in my opinion but does add to the background of the current world of Marvel's bowman.

Rating: 5 Stars (Recommended)
