Conan The King #50 (Marvel/1989)
Conan The King #50 (Marvel)
James Owsley (w) Geof Isherwood (a)
Of all the Conan titles this is the one with which I am least familiar having read only the first issue before. This was picked up as random purchase as I had hoped this would be a self contained story. It wasn't so a couple more purchases may be necessary!
It's difficult to imagine Conan as a husband and father to two sons (one "deceased") and a daughter coming of age. In fact the old Barbarian is now in his sixties and still quite a formidable fellow. he also has quite a spooky personal guard.
Unsurprisingly Conan still has female admirers including one Queen Aylett whose departure and subsequent kidnapping is central to the story as is his crippled younger son. Prince Taurus has a goats leg that makes him hobble and a bit of an outcast. he's also dabbles with magic.
Enter the Baron Maloric who has been plotting to take Conan's throne. Not a very likeable chap it has to be said. So there's a plot afoot with Queens to rescue and a surprise guest at the end. Or is it? Guess I'll have to buy #51 to find out.
Great art and dialogue. A bit of sword & sorcery never goes amiss. Big fan of the Cimmerian that I am!
This comic started as King Conan and changed it's title as of #20. No idea why. It also only ran for a further 5 issues after this one sadly.
